All it takes is the right ingredients with the right recipe and you’ll be eating the ultimate spicy chicken sandwich you’ve ever tasted.
This chicken sandwich recipe is super crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside and loaded with hot spices that make your mouth tingle. Popeye’s made their sandwich famous through marketing, but our recipe is famous for TASTE. Let’s get started!
Spicy Chicken Sandwich Recipe
Although this recipe comes together in about 30 minutes, keep in mind that the best results require an overnight marinade to properly season and tenderize the chicken breasts.
Required Ingredients
- chicken breasts
- buttermilk
- flour
- corn starch
- spices
- Crystal Louisiana Pure Hot Sauce
- brioche buns
- Frank’s Red Hot XTRA Hot Sauce
- High-Quality Mayonnaise
To Make the Marinade:
Pour 2 cups of buttermilk into a stainless steel bowl. Add a tablespoon of cayenne pepper. Add one teaspoon of red pepper flakes. Finish it off with a half cup of Crystal Louisiana Pure Hot Sauce and wisk until blended. (More spice may be required depending upon your desired heat level).
Cut your boneless, skinless chicken breast into bun-sized pieces and flatten each piece with a mallet until the thickness is even throughout. Once the breasts are prepped, insert the breasts into the buttermilk marinade and refrigerate overnight.
To Make the Flour Coating:
Pour 2 cups of All-Purpose Flour into a bowl. Add 1 cup of corn starch (for extra crispiness). Stir in 2 tablespoons of freshly ground black pepper. Add one tablespoon of cayenne pepper. Add 1 tablespoon of Badia Complete Seasoning to round out the flavor.
Note: If you prefer a bold kick to your flavor, add garlic powder and onion powder to your flour mix.
To Make Spicy Mayo Sauce:
Combine 1/2 cup of mayo with 2 teaspoons of Frank’s Red Hot XTRA Hot Sauce , 1 teaspoon of paprika, and 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper. Whisk until blended well. The sauce is a delicious blend of heat and flavor and gives the chicken sandwich just the right amount of pop!
Bring the Spicy Chicken Sandwich Together
Remove the chicken breasts from the marinade one at a time and coat thoroughly in the flour mix. Once the breast is completely covered in flour, dip the breast a second time in the buttermilk marinade. Allow any excess marinade to drip from the breast and repeat the dip into the flour mix a second time. Now that the breast is completely coated in flour, set aside on a grate and rest it while your vegetable oil warms in a frying pan or skillet.
Fry each breast on medium-high heat for 5-7 minutes per side or until golden brown. When finished, remove the breasts from the oil and rest on a clean grate.
Chicken Sandwich Prep
If you desire, toast the inside of the Brioche bun until golden brown. Coat each bun with a generous amount of the spicy mayonnaise sauce. Add a slice of red onion, tomato, lettuce or coleslaw, and dill pickle slices. Combine these elements inside the bun and serve hot.
Note: if flaming hot is your forte, add a little sliced jalepeno pepper for an added kick!
This combination of spice, veggies and chicken comes together to make the ultimate spicy chicken sandwich that will leave you wanting more! Add fresh-cut fries or potato chips and your meal is complete.
